Signalment: Nine year old female spayed Rottweiler

History: 3 day history of lethargy, anorexia, vomiting, and distended abdomen.

Abdominal ultrasound:

Answer:

Ultrasonographic findings:

A small amount of echogenic free fluid is present in the abdomen.

The spleen is normally proximally, and enlarged distally, with a mottled echogenicity

The liver is normal.

Ultrasonographic diagnosis:

  1. Peritonitis
  2. Focal splenic necrosis or infiltrative disease (lymphoma, mast cell disease)

Surgical diagnosis:

At surgery, the distal aspect of the spleen was necrotic, and a mild amount of free abdominal fluid was identified.
