Signalment:
Nine year old female spayed Rottweiler

3 day history of lethargy, anorexia, vomiting, and distended abdomen.


Initial differentials?

 

Sonographic Findings:

  1. A small amount of echogenic free fluid is present in the abdomen.
  2. The spleen is normally proximally, and enlarged distally, with a mottled echogenicity
  3. The liver is normal.

Ultrasonographic Diagnosis:

  1. Peritonitis
  2. Focal splenic necrosis or infiltrative disease (lymphoma, mast cell disease)

Surgical Diagnosis:

  1. At surgery, the distal aspect of the spleen was necrotic, and a mild amount of free abdominal fluid was identified.
